According to the American Student Assistance ranges from 19,000 dollars while in other sources mentions as high as 26,000 dollars. The range of debt differs according to race. The leading race who avails of student loan is the American Indians followed by African American and thirdly the Hispanic American. Asians avail of student loan but to a lesser percentage. The survey was done on senior students in universities and colleges. It is nice to know that Americans do avail of the student loan program but what is alarming is that the number of students who are in debt increases every year. It just follows that college education nowadays is becoming more of a distant dream. The tuition fees of colleges and universities are simply too high for low income families and even middle class earners have a difficulty.
The increasing number of student loans is very alarming that government assistance like grants and funds would not be enough to cushion the soaring expenses required in attending colleges and universities. College education will eventually become a dream for those who are less fortunate. The government must do more to safeguard the education of our youth because if they do not do measures to make higher education more accessible, the younger generations will definitely suffer.
It is important that the government initialize programs to make education more of a right than a privilege. As it is now, families have trouble having ends meet and they could not simply sustain the high cost of college education.
